Is Lapband Surgery Right For You?

Lapband surgery is a procedure which is done in order to assist people who are considerably overweight. It is a surgical procedure but is not as invasive as the gastric bypass surgery that was done just a few years back.

In order to be considered a candidate for the lap-band surgery you must be at least 100 pounds overweight and have a body mass index above 40. There are circumstances when the BMI can be less than 40, like if you are diabetic or have other severe medical conditions.

Before a person is able to have lapband surgery, they must undergo physical and psychological examinations in order to determine if they are a good candidate for the surgery. You must also understand that there will be restrictions of the types of food and how much you are able to eat. You will also want to take into consideration foods that you might not be able to tolerate after the surgery such as fried or spicy foods.

With the lapband surgery, you will have a belt that will go around the upper portion of the stomach with a port connected. This port will be able to be inflated in order to help with weight loss. When having the surgery, some doctors will require an overnight stay at the hospital and some will let you go home the same day.

You will begin your weight loss program with a liquid diet and then go on to soft foods. After a time you will be able to eat some solid foods.

You will need to begin an exercise program as you should with any weight loss program. Be sure to follow up on all your doctors appointments.
